The Beast from the East left us in time for Easter and we were delighted to begin our Summer programme of  Tuesday Talks at the Army & Navy Club with a fascinating talk by Peter York, author of the  famous “Official Sloane Ranger Handbook” (1982). Peter was interviewed by journalist Alfred Tong and shared with us his social observations through the ages ; From  Sloane Rangers to Hipsters and beyond. Baroness Gillian Shephard spoke about her memories of the real Iron Lady. We were delighted to welcome Richard Shuttleworth who told us about his time flying in Arabia with the Royal Oman Police. British costume designer Tom Rand, came to speak about some of the extraordinary actresses he has been lucky to have worked with, in particular, Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Angela Lansbury, Dame Elizabeth Taylor, Dame Penelope Wilton, Vivien Leigh, Faye Dunaway and Meryl Streep. In June we welcomed Michael Jay, the only living non-Japanese person to hold a samurai rank and Katie Flitcroft spoke about Silver in the Treasure Houses of Britain.

Our External visits included going to The Fine Art Society in Bond Street, London’s oldest commercial Art Gallery. During Chelsea Flower Show week, we had the privilege of visiting the magnificent garden Squares of Belgravia, a visit led by Timothy Jones, Associate Director of Grosvenor’s London Estate. We also travelled to West Sussex to see the Fishbourne Roman Palace and we were guided through the Fulham Palace by Miranda Poliakoff, Museum Curator of  the Fulham Palace. Our  Summer programme concluded with an exclusive personal tour of the Old Bailey led by Aldermanic Sheriff Tim Hailes JP who told us about the fascinating history of the Court and some of the most interesting trials. We would like to thank everyone involved in the Summer programme for their contributions in making all these events, talks and visits such a success.
